For the first time since 1971, Bangladesh and Pakistan have established direct sea connectivity. On Monday, November 11, a cargo vessel from Pakistan's Karachi arrived at Bangladesh's Chattogram port. This marks the first time since Bangladesh's independence that a cargo ship from Karachi has anchored directly at Chattogram.

According to the Chattogram Port Authority, the Panama-flagged container vessel, YUAN XIANG FA ZHAN, reached the port via Dubai and Karachi on November 11. The ship carried 370 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers. After unloading its cargo, the vessel departed the following day for Indonesia. However, the exact contents of the containers from Karachi are yet to be confirmed. The types of goods will be known once importers submit the bill of entry to customs during clearance.

Commenting on the development, Chattogram Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruq stated, “The cargo ship from Karachi has left after unloading 317 containers at the New Mooring Container Terminal. Some containers were also brought from Dubai. Once the importers submit their documents to customs, the exact details of the goods will be available.”

A port official added that the vessel traveled from Dubai to Karachi and then to Chattogram before heading to Indonesia, Malaysia, and back to Dubai. He expressed hope for regular shipping operations along this route.

On Wednesday, November 13, the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka issued a statement confirming the arrival of the cargo ship, emphasizing that this direct shipping route will simplify the supply chain and reduce transit time. The ship, with a capacity of approximately 2,300 TEUs, carried various goods, reflecting the growing demand for direct trade between the two nations.

The High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh, Syed Ahmed Maroof, described the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral trade and economic relations. He stated that this development would create new opportunities for businesses of all sizes, from small traders to major exporters.

Historical Significance and Economic Prospects

The direct shipping route is viewed as a major step in enhancing trade ties between the two Muslim-majority countries. According to the British publication The Independent, the docking of a Pakistani cargo ship at a Bangladeshi port symbolizes a historic shift and could pave the way for warmer relations between the two countries. It also suggests a new chapter in their complex diplomatic ties, particularly following the recent change in Bangladesh's political leadership.

Prominent Bangladeshi industrialist and Managing Director of Premier Cement PLC, Md. Amirul Haque, noted that a regular shipping route with Pakistan could bring significant economic benefits. He remarked, “Direct imports of goods such as rice, onions, fruits, and raw materials for garments could reduce costs and increase profitability. Likewise, exports of products like jute could also be expedited.”

Geopolitical Implications

The development has drawn attention from India. According to The Telegraph India, India's security agencies are concerned about the direct shipping link between its two neighbors. The report suggested that this route might impact India's northeastern states, known as the "Seven Sisters," which are geographically close to the Bangladesh border.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, both Islamabad and Dhaka have shown interest in normalizing relations. In September, interim Bangladeshi Prime Minister Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss renewed cooperation.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in regional trade and diplomacy, potentially opening new avenues for economic and cultural exchanges.
